Does the prospect of the use of nuclear weapons make you afraid? How do you overcome this fear? — By filling your thoughts with the love of God the Father. Whoever considers His love will be comforted. God always finds a way to help and protect, even in the greatest affliction. For instance, He can command fire not to burn. Remember the angel sent to help Daniel’s friends in the fiery furnace. God declares He will be with His children in their distress — a promise valid for all times. He says, ‘When you pass through the waters I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.’ God will be near you in times of acute distress and will help you. May this comforting assurance sustain you (Isaiah 43:2).

You are downhearted. You cannot rejoice in God. Start thinking of what your heavenly Father means to you. He is a God who helps. He is your loving Father, who always has thoughts for your good. He will complete the work He began in your life, preparing you for heavenly glory. He is almighty and offers you shelter and protection. He has given His only-begotten Son for your redemption. As you think about these different truths concerning God and praise Him for them, sadness will yield and joy will be kindled anew in your heart.

Does the thought of war and catastrophe make you feel anxious? Your loving Father in heaven assures you, His small and fearful child, ‘No evil shall befall you, no scourge come near your tent.’ Yet you wonder how that could be if you were surrounded by utter devastation. The answer is that God would protect you through the mighty, strong angels He has ready for you. But then you ask, ‘What if I die?’ If this were to happen, angels would carry you home. The presence of Jesus and His love would enfold you so that no evil could overtake you. This, and nothing less, is what you would experience. Psalm 91:10

Fearing the power of the atom, we look for a stronger power capable of protecting us from radioactive fall-out. If we knew this power, our problems would be solved. This power exists. It is the Lord, who made heaven and earth. Consequently, He has control over atomic power. Through His only-begotten Son, He says to those who believe in Him, ‘Behold, I have given you authority … over all the power of the enemy; and nothing shall hurt you.’ — ‘If they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them.’ The Word of God holds true (Luke 10:19, Mark 16:18).

You think that, when disaster strikes, you will be completely at the mercy of the forces of destruction. But God’s Word tells us differently. It says, ‘When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles … Many are the afflictions of the righteous; but the Lord delivers him out of them all. He keeps all his bones; not one of them is broken.’ So take care that you belong to the ‘righteous’ who, having been made right with God through the blood of Jesus, live according to the commandments of God. Then God’s promise of special help and protection is yours. (Psalm 34:17-20)

Whoever loves has to be with the beloved, especially when the beloved is in distress, as we know from the Bible: ‘I will be with him in trouble.’ The Lord is present when the need is greatest — when, for example, wars flare up. He will surround us on all sides, protecting us from the advancing terrors. This the Almighty can do. (Psalm 91:15; 125:2)
