In all eternity the love of God the Father can never be fathomed. He has been hurt and insulted by us. Our sins brought immeasurable pain and death to His only-begotten Son. What is God’s answer to our shameful conduct? God accepts us as His children through faith in Jesus Christ. He loves us tenderly and cares for us. He opens heaven for us so that we may one day enter into His glory.
And yet we dare to be ungrateful and proud. Unbelievably, we rebel against God time and again. We accuse Him when we do not understand His actions and leadings. We think that He is being hard on us. We should not be surprised, then, if our relationship with God is disrupted and we do not receive any help or comfort. God gives grace only to the humble (Psalm 96:1).

Many people have a personal faith in Jesus Christ and call God their Father. Yet they are unfamiliar with childlike prayer, which God promises to answer. They fail to turn daily from their pride and self-sufficiency, their rebellion against chastening, and their desire for power or prestige. With such an attitude how can they pray in a childlike way and receive God’s gifts as true children of His? God gives grace only to the humble. The prayers of the humble and lowly pierce the clouds. Be willing to bear humbling experiences, so that you become a true child. Then your prayers will have power.

Blessed are those who in the truest sense of the word have become children of God, children of the heavenly Father through Jesus Christ. They will be spared the anguish that comes from doubting whether the will of God is still love when He has to chasten us and be firm with us. True children of God are sure that, even when their heavenly Father disciplines them, He is motivated by love. They can sense His love in His grief, in the pain occasioned by their sinful behaviour and the need to discipline them. Allow yourself to be humbled, so that you become as small as a child. Then in every chastening you will rest in the Father’s will, and His discipline will have a beneficial effect on your life.
