Do you think that God is fighting against you? Trust that whenever God seems to be fighting against you, He is actually fighting for you. He is your loving Father and always will be. Only sometimes does He act as if He were an enemy — as He once did with Jacob — in order to challenge you to a persevering battle of faith. Like Jacob, you should constantly repeat, ‘I will not let You go, unless You bless me.’ God wants you to emerge victorious from such wrestling in faith. He wants to make you a channel of blessing, one to whom He can entrust great commissions. (Genesis 32)

God Himself tells us that He delights in doing His children good. However, He often has to wait until we are ready to receive the good things; otherwise we would trample them underfoot, so to speak. First He has to prepare us so that we are able to receive His good gifts in the right spirit; only then will they bring us true joy and blessing. Instead of being defiant when having to wait, let us willingly accept God’s chastening, which is preparing us to receive His good gifts properly. Then we will receive them more quickly. When God can grant His gifts partly depends on us. (Jeremiah 32:41)

Even on days when there is so much to do? — Yes, precisely then. When we sing, heaven comes down. God draws close when we sing praises to Him. Then our activities will be under the guidance of His Spirit. And whatever we do will be successful, being under His blessing. We will receive the strength to overcome the difficulties that arise. Our work will yield eternal fruit, because it has been done in union with God.

Creation declares that God alone is the Maker. This means that it is not we human beings who are the creators of the universe. We are creatures, not masters. We are dependent upon God. Where there is no love, however, there is no willingness to be dependent — only a desire to be free, to have one’s own way and to be master of one’s own destiny. But whoever loves rejoices in this dependence, just as a child is happy to be dependent upon his father. Dependence ties the bond of love even more tightly. Accept this dependence upon God the Father as His child, and you will be a child of God in the truest sense of the word, experiencing the joy and benefits of this relationship. You will discover how blessed it is to be loved, guided and cared for by God the Father.

In His infinite love God has prepared for us a precious gift: repentance. People living in repentance are spiritually richest. They continually experience the love, forgiveness and compassion of God. They have access to His heart and all the blessings of renewal. Those who turn from their sins, not just once, but daily, will experience abundant grace. God has promised grace to contrite, humble hearts — not to those who are self-righteous, overconfident and complacent. Reach out for repentance as something highly desirable. The love of God is holding it ready for you.

You complain that your Christian life is lacking power and effectiveness. The fault must lie with you. God in His great love is only interested in blessing and empowering us. That is why He sent His beloved Son. He redeemed us to bear fruit and bring blessings to others. He shows us the way. Begin to make sacrifices for God and His kingdom, sacrifices which cost you something. Offer your sacrifices in faith. When you sacrifice your energy, trust Him to renew your strength. When you sacrifice money and possessions for Him and His kingdom, trust Him to supply your needs in other ways. Then you will experience the love of God as never before, and you will become a channel of blessing for others. (Romans 12:1)

God is laying a heavy cross upon you. You would like to shake off this crushing load. But did you know that only the proud want to do so? They think they do not need it. The humble, on the other hand, are well aware that they need chastening. They know how good and beneficial their cross is for them. The choice is yours. Either your cross will oppress you because you refuse to accept it humbly, or else your cross will become light because you praise God for the blessing it will bring you. It is for your own good that the Lord gives you a cross.

Does God’s heart seem to be closed to you? There is a way to open it — thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a sign of humble love. The humble are astonished when someone does them even the smallest favour, for they feel undeserving. They respond with loving thanks and try to repay the giver. Start thanking God for even the slightest consideration given by others; note each act of kindness; for ultimately it all comes from His hands. Such thanksgiving will open God’s heart wide, and streams of blessing will flow down upon you.
