Living in the nuclear age, we seek security as no other generation. In the coming time of great distress only those who are already at home in the heart of God will be secure. Those who can say now amid trouble and anxiety, ‘The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble,’ will know the reality of this affirmation when faced with even greater trouble and anxiety. So let us use present difficulties to practise living in the security of His heart. Then we will be able to do the same in the time of testing. (Nahum 1:7)

Who will be strong and not faint with fear during times of great distress? — Those who have learnt to say lovingly in their hearts, ‘My Father, my dearest Father.’ Those who now live with a childlike trust in God the Father in everyday life, no matter what their needs, will become strong and experience His help when they call upon His name in times of great distress. Practise now going through life in this way with your heavenly Father, calling upon His name trustingly. His name will prove its power and bring you help even in the deepest night of suffering.

You are in great distress, because you cannot sense the presence of God and your relationship with Him seems dead. God is acting as if He were a stranger to you. He seems so far away. You are beginning to doubt His love … Believe that He is showing you His special love now. He wants to make your love pure and genuine. That is why He is testing it. Love which has stood the test is precious and brings a rich reward. This love proves itself by continuing to trust God in trials and temptations, by obediently walking in His ways, and by making sacrifices for Him. No sacrifice is more precious than that offered in times of spiritual drought. Such love, which is not based on feelings, is the greatest present you can give to the Father.

You are plagued by bitter thoughts and accusations against your fellow beings. You cannot understand why God allows them to do you so much harm. God, however, wants to help you. He warns you that your thoughts are going in the wrong direction and that you are unhappy, having linked yourself with Satan, the Accuser, who always makes us feel depressed. Instead of accusing others, accuse yourself for the trouble you cause God every day with your sins and for the distress you have already caused many others. Thank the Lord for being gracious to you nonetheless, and then be kind to your neighbour. Thank God for His love in wanting to free you from your accusations against others by showing you your own faults. Now the moment has come when God wants to help you, cleanse you, free you from a critical attitude — and fill your heart with peace. Accept His help.
