Pray daily in the words of the disciples, ‘Increase our faith!’ A strong faith is something we often lack. Yet in order to perform the tasks God gives, faith is essential. In all your work and activities, yes, even in your prayer life, everything depends on having faith. Faith determines whether your prayers and actions will be fruitful. You may offer many prayers to God, perhaps even repeating the same request again and again. However, if you do not count on God having help prepared, nor expect it to come, then nothing will happen. If you are lacking faith, ask for it and count on God answering. He will produce faith in you. Then, having blessed this first step of faith, God will inspire you with further prayers of faith (Luke 17:5).

Once — perhaps it was only yesterday — you saw how God answered prayer, helped you in your troubles and brought you through your afflictions. Once — perhaps it was only yesterday — when you were very sad, you saw how He comforted you and did not allow you to be tempted beyond your powers of endurance. Do you think that the God of yesterday is not the same as the God of today? Believe that just as ‘Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and for ever’, so is God your Father the same for all eternity. He will take care of you today as well. He will not allow you to be tempted beyond your powers of endurance today either, but will carry you through. Cling to this knowledge in implicit trust. Then you will overcome all difficulties through faith in the One whose power and love are the same today (Hebrews 13:8, 1 Corinthians 10:13).

Did you pray this morning? Perhaps you think, ‘I cannot pray. There is no point in my praying. God does not hear me anyway! I’m too bad.’ You are mistaken. God does hear. It is a matter of dialling the right number in order to get through. So begin with the prayer which is preliminary to all other prayers and which never fails to reach God’s heart. Confess to Him how weak and sinful you are, where you have failed and done wrong. Tell Him the accumulated sins marring your life. Tell Him what you are like and be honest about your spiritual condition. Be brave and tell all this to a spiritual counsellor as well. Sin needs to be brought to light and confessed. Then you will receive forgiveness and experience release through Jesus’ saving power. God, who loves you, cannot bear to see you unhappy. He is waiting for you to come. All those who confess their sins will be taken into His loving embrace. Their prayers will be answered, because there is no unforgiven sin standing between them and God.

Whoever wishes to ask much of the heavenly Father, and to receive much, should obey His will and His commandments as a true child of His. Jesus says, for instance, ‘Judge not, that you be not judged.’ If we persist in being judgmental and speaking ill of others and do not repent, we will come under judgment ourselves. Sometimes God judges us by not opening His hand and answering our prayers. (Matthew 7:1)

God makes us an exceptional offer, saying in effect, Ask much, and it will be given you (Matthew 7:7). Heaven and earth are Mine. All My messengers are at My disposal, ready to serve Me and to carry out My commands. They are sent forth to serve you – ten thousand times ten thousand – as a powerful force (Daniel 7:10 & Hebrews 1:14). What more do you need? Ask for much, ask Me for big things, and you will receive accordingly!

If we want God to answer our prayers, we need to pray the kind of prayers He has promised to answer. Prayerfully mention to God the Father the name of Jesus, His beloved Son. His name is a key which opens the Father’s heart. Ask to be shown concerns in keeping with Jesus’ mind and will; pray for these concerns in His name. The name of Jesus moves His heart to act on our behalf, for the Father cannot refuse any request of His Son. This is why Jesus says, “The Father will give you whatever you ask of him in my name.” Ask like this. Then you will experience the fulfilment of your prayers.

You ask why God does not answer your prayers. Could it be that there is some obstacle? For instance, if we misuse the gift of His forgiveness by not forgiving others, we block the way for further gifts of God. When God does not answer, ask God to show you what you might have done wrong. Ask Him to give you a truly repentant heart. Make every effort to put things right again. Then the way will be clear and your prayers can rise up to God.
