“For this slight momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison.” 2 Corinthians 4:17

Suffering creates glory. Yet so often we are unhappy in our suffering. Not a glimmer of God’s love, comfort and glory penetrates our hearts. But our heavenly Father, who is love, knows what will comfort us. He urges us not to bear our cross like a slave who is forced to, but out of love for Jesus. When we bear it trusting in the Father’s love and committed to His will, then our cross will begin to shine. We will become happy and we, too, will shine in His love.

It is not difficult for Him to comfort you. His love is so great that He never fails to find words and ways to express comfort. And His power to help is so great that He always has a solution; it may not come right away, but it will be perfect in its timing.

God our Father allowed His only-begotten Son to suffer. Like a lamb led to the slaughter, Jesus did not return insult for insult, or utter threats, when He suffered. Now God is looking for the characteristics of the Lamb in His children. Always choose to follow Jesus’ example, and you will have the spiritual authority you desire. God in His love wants to give it to you. It has been promised to those who are lamblike. (1 Peter 2:23)

God loves us. This is why He longs for us to rejoice and be glad – already now, but most of all on the day of His Son’s return. Who will experience this joy? — Those who suffer with Christ. The apostle Peter challenges us to ‘rejoice in so far as you share Christ’s sufferings’ (see 1 Peter 4:13 RSV). He even calls it a special privilege to suffer pain and disgrace for Jesus’ sake. Why? It is the way to the abundant joy our heavenly Father wants to give. He cannot bear to see anyone sad. When God counts you worthy of being misunderstood, excluded and humiliated for His name’s sake, say, ‘Thank You for counting me worthy of suffering for Your name’s sake.’ Then joy will enter your heart.

Whoever wants to know what a loving Father we have in God should picture, in spirit, the City of God. Prompted by His love for us, God has prepared a heavenly creation full of glory and perfect beauty to be the eternal dwelling-place of those who belong to Him. The Father wants to see His children happy. That is why He has prepared heaven, the City of God, for their eternal home. In days of suffering think of the love of the Father, which has prepared for you a heaven of perfect happiness and glory. Then all earthly suffering will lose its power to make you sad.

“The Lord is compassionate and merciful” – these words were written over Job’s life. The Lord was filled with pity for Job. As the heavenly Father, God suffered with His servant Job when he endured affliction. Whoever suffers with the sufferer will try to ensure a good outcome. This is why in the end God more than restored all that Job had lost. This is an eternal law of the love of God in dealing with His chosen ones. So wait for the gracious ending of your suffering, and you will find that God will grant you more blessings than before (James 5:11).

When suffering is about to get you down, remember that you are not at the mercy of blind fate. Remember, rather, that your suffering comes from the hand of your heavenly Father. Begin to praise God the Father for sending you suffering that will achieve eternal glory. Suffering is meant to make us like Christ and to help us reap a great harvest. So say to the Father, ‘I’ll suffer gladly. This will prepare me to dwell in glory for ever.’ Then blessing and comfort will flow into your heart.

God loves us as a Father. He takes care that difficult times are always followed by times of spiritual refreshment. In His love He has already prepared a table for His children in the presence of their enemies (Psalm 23:5) and in the face of their troubles. After times of weeping, His children are to rejoice and be glad. So in times of suffering let us look forward to the joyful times which will most definitely follow. Then the oppressive power of sadness will be overcome.
