Our love is precious to God the Father. He values it highly. Time and again He calls us to love Him, promising to love us in return. He wants to make His home in our hearts. Yes, He wants to visit you if you love Him. What an unimaginable privilege and honour! Do not throw it away frivolously. Give God your love. You may ask how. Jesus gives you the answer: ‘He who has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me.’ This is not a matter of feelings. It is simply a matter of obeying His commandments, above all, His commandment of love — love which does not become resentful but which bears and endures all things. Those who strive daily to keep His commandments will experience the Father’s love most (John 14:21, 1 Corinthians 13).

‘Love Me!’ This is the Lord’s request to you. You are sad, because you cannot sense any love in you. But love does not show itself merely in feelings. Rather, it shows itself in obedience and in faithful endurance during trials and temptations. By your very steadfastness you can show God that you love Him. Another proof of love is that you always choose God and His way. Do that, and you will be loving God your Father and fulfilling His command. Then He will keep His promise to you. He will love you in return and come and make His home in your heart.

God our Father expects His children to be dedicated to His will in obedience. Indeed, our security and happiness lie in such dedication. Union with the will of God leads to union with His nature, enabling His children to reflect His glory. When God leads you along a path that goes against your will and wishes, He is challenging you to surrender your will to Him. He wants to give you the precious gift of being one with Him. (2 Corinthians 3:18)

You long to have the Father’s approval. You can receive it. In the life of His beloved Son, God has shown us the way. Jesus walked in obedience and gave Himself in serving others. He humbled Himself deeply, identifying with sinners in the River Jordan, drawing from the Father words of approval: ‘This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.’ You, too, will have the Father’s approval if you show the same attitude of humble obedience and service as did Jesus. (Matthew 3:17, Philippians 2:5-8)
