God loves us. This is why He longs for us to rejoice and be glad – already now, but most of all on the day of His Son’s return. Who will experience this joy? — Those who suffer with Christ. The apostle Peter challenges us to ‘rejoice in so far as you share Christ’s sufferings’ (see 1 Peter 4:13 RSV). He even calls it a special privilege to suffer pain and disgrace for Jesus’ sake. Why? It is the way to the abundant joy our heavenly Father wants to give. He cannot bear to see anyone sad. When God counts you worthy of being misunderstood, excluded and humiliated for His name’s sake, say, ‘Thank You for counting me worthy of suffering for Your name’s sake.’ Then joy will enter your heart.

It is the child who repents and returns to the Father daily, saying like the prodigal son, ’Father, I have sinned.’ The Father’s heart will be drawn to him in love, for He rejoices over every sinner who repents. The heavenly Father always has joys in store for His children — not just in heaven but here and now. He wants to grant His children the hidden treasures of the kingdom of heaven. He wants to disclose to them the secret of heavenly, festive joy even in this life. Do not set the joys and pleasures of this world above the gifts of God, doubting that God will really give you true happiness and fulfilment here and now. When life grows dark and earthly joys grow dim, you will then be desperately poor. Dare to forgo earthly joys for the sake of heavenly, eternal joys. You will not regret it. Rather, you will experience the fullness of joy. Do not wait until the doors are closed before turning to your heavenly Father in complete confidence, otherwise it will be too late.

Wait in this way for the coming of God your Father. He is coming, because His love continually draws Him to us. He always brings something wonderful with Him: a scripture, a joy, a present. Look out expectantly for Him, and new life and happiness will fill your heart.

Christmas is the festival of joy. Our hearts are hungry for joy. Often we are burdened and troubled. But that holy night brought us Someone greater than everything – JESUS! He is the only One who can relieve us of all our burdens. So bring Him whatever is getting you down. He is waiting for you, longing to give you joy, to release you from your burdens and problems. He will give you His joy instead, a joy that no one can take away from you. (John 16:22)

Each day brings something different. This day will bring you certain joys and sorrows; the next day, different ones. But nothing happens to you by chance — not even the smallest incident in your life. We read in Scripture, ‘As for God, his way is perfect.’ God has planned every day of your life, attending to all the details. Everything is perfect. Learn to see the Father’s hand in everything that happens to you. Whatever comes from Him can only be filled with blessing and serve for your good. With a humble, loving and thankful heart accept everything He brings into your life each day, and you will be richly blessed by the love of God — even through events and circumstances that go against the grain.

Are you feeling depressed? Are you experiencing trials and temptations? Then the command ‘Rejoice always!’ is more relevant than ever. Joy needs to be practised, and God challenges us to do just that. He knows that depression and gloom make us weak, and He wants us to be strong. The joy of the Lord is our strength. So rejoice in the Lord by giving thanks for the fatherly love of God. If He cares for the birds of the air, how much more will He care for you!
Thank Him for loving you as His child and for forgiving you for the sake of Jesus’ suffering. Then joy will enter your heart — joy that can never be taken from you, because it comes from God, who is eternal. And so you will receive the strength to overcome. (1 Thessalonians 5:16; Nehemiah 8:10)

What is a mark of great love? — When a person always wants to have us near him and to share everything with us. This is how God the Father loves us. Though sinful by nature, we are so precious in His sight that He will open the gate to the City of God if we come home as victors. There the Father wants us to dwell with Him for ever. Who can fathom such grace? Live in this attitude of hope. Then all your sorrows will fade away in the light of heaven’s glory, and you will be filled with joy and confidence.
