You say, ‘So often I have trouble believing.’ You cannot believe, because ultimately you expect everything of yourself, or of other people and their help. But now you have exhausted your own resources. That is good. Expect nothing more of yourself. Rely no longer on human aid. Now the time has come when God wants to demonstrate His might and help. By claiming them in faith, you are already helped.

You say you are too weak and helpless and this is why you cannot believe. The truth is just the opposite. You are still too strong. You have too much faith in yourself. Those who genuinely see their limitations expect nothing of self — but all of God. They are forced to cling to Him for help. That is faith. Desire to be small, weak and needy like a little child. Then you will be able to believe. Then you will receive help from God your Father.

God seldom gives His children a long-range view of the path they are following. He lets them see only the next stretch they have to cover. Why? — Because this is the best training in faith for the future, which still lies in darkness. Since God loves us, He wants to grant us the crown of faith one day. That is why He has to give us opportunities now to practise faith.

Perhaps you are carrying a heavy burden. It seems to be mountainous, and you feel nearly crushed beneath the weight. You cannot imagine this mountain ever being moved. But God in His love has already planned a solution. Dig underground tunnels. Burrow your way through bit by bit. Finally the mountain will be undermined — and collapse. Then, where once there was a mountain, will be seen a new and marvellous work of God. And what are these underground tunnels? — Small steps of faith leading to victory.

This will happen to the extent that we dare launch out in faith at His word. According to the measure of our faith will we experience God’s miracles and glorify Him.

Fear of the coming times of distress is almost strangling you. You think you can never be happy again. But then the voice of Someone reaches you — Someone who has known God from the beginning of time as His only-begotten Son. It is the voice of Jesus: ‘Have faith in God.’ — ‘Will not God vindicate his elect, who cry to him day and night? … I tell you, he will vindicate them speedily.’ (Mark 11:22; Luke 18:7-8)

‘I am lacking in this and that, in fact, in everything, and so there is no help for me’ — or so you conclude. However, as far as God your Father is concerned, it makes no difference whether you lack much or little. On the contrary, the greater your needs, the more He can demonstrate His wonder-working power. Rejoice in the assurance: ‘God will give me what I lack for the very reason that I am lacking so much.’ Such faith will bring about a transformation of circumstances.

You know what it is to pray. But that is not enough. You need to pray in faith, firmly trusting in God’s help. Put your faith into action. Do not just bring petitions.

Pray like this: ‘Thank You, Father, that You have already planned help for me. Thank You that You have a solution to my problem. Thank You that Jesus’ victory over my sin has already been won.’ There is a promise attached to such prayer. It moves the arm of God so that the difficulty must yield before His almighty power. Make use of this provision. Through thanksgiving you will become strong and full of joy. When your pleas to the heavenly Father are embedded in thanksgiving and faith, they will be heard. (see Matthew 21:22 & Philippians 4:6)

Pray daily in the words of the disciples, ‘Increase our faith!’ A strong faith is something we often lack. Yet in order to perform the tasks God gives, faith is essential. In all your work and activities, yes, even in your prayer life, everything depends on having faith. Faith determines whether your prayers and actions will be fruitful. You may offer many prayers to God, perhaps even repeating the same request again and again. However, if you do not count on God having help prepared, nor expect it to come, then nothing will happen. If you are lacking faith, ask for it and count on God answering. He will produce faith in you. Then, having blessed this first step of faith, God will inspire you with further prayers of faith (Luke 17:5).

We have a heavenly Father who is almighty. The question is: Who will experience His mighty deeds? — Those who believe in His ability to do them. Faith in God is a power capable of transforming everything — it is not faith in a vacuum, but faith in the living Lord, who has power to help and who demonstrates this for those who trust in Him. Therefore, have faith in Him when you are in despair, and the storm will abate. Trust in Him when you are afraid, and your fears will be calmed. Believe, and you will experience miracles.
