God sends you a cross because, as a Father, He has to discipline and refine you. Now He is waiting for your response. Will you respond to the Father like a child? Will He hear you say: ‘I want my cross. It comes from Your hands. You gave it to me, and if You do not want to take it away, I will accept it as a gift from You’? Believe that this act of dedication has power before the invisible world. Satan, who hates the cross, will flee from you, while Jesus, who humbly carried the cross, will draw near to you. Filled with joy, He will take you in His arms. In you He has found a true disciple, one who has obeyed His command: ‘If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.’ You have comforted the heart of Jesus and the Father. (Matthew 16:24)

You keep thinking, ‘Why does God, who says that He is a Father of love, lay this cross upon me?’ Do not keep your eyes on yourself but on Jesus, who entered glory through the cross. Your cross is meant to be a ship carrying you to the City of God, where you want to go. To this day there is no other way to glory. It is the cross and suffering that prepare eternal blessedness for us, according to Scripture. So look forward with joy to the heavenly glory. In faith live even now as though already having attained the heavenly goal. Then the things that are difficult to bear will become easy. (Acts 14:22; 2Timothy 2:12)

Does it seem incompatible that a God of love, who counts our tears, can send us suffering and crosses, which cost us tears? The Lord’s reply to that is, ‘Blessed are you that weep now, for you shall laugh.’ The blessing is hidden in love for the cross. Do you lack this love for your cross? Then you cannot be happy. Love your cross as a gift from your heavenly Father — and love will make it bearable. The secret of the love of the Father and the love of Jesus will be revealed to you and make you happy even amid tears. (Psalm 56:8; Luke 6:21)
