You have to follow a difficult path of suffering. You hardly know how you are going to manage. But there is a way. With every bitter step say: ‘On paths of suffering, when night surrounds me, I praise Him for the blessing that will come. God’s will is goodness and loving-kindness. Good are the ways He leads His own.’ Then your heart will be comforted, and out of the night new life will be born.

God the Father always has a tender, loving word for any child of His in need. He says, ‘Fear not … I will help you.’ Or He assures him that he is chosen and beloved. From this we have a glimpse of the love in the Father’s heart. Whoever opens himself up to this love will be healed of all the troubles in his soul. Feed on this assurance like food, and you will indeed taste how good the Lord is. (Isaiah 41:10)

If a child is hurt or upset, he expects his father to take him in his arms and comfort him. How much more should we count on the love of our heavenly Father in such situations. His love is a thousand times greater than the love of all human fathers. Jesus’ words, ‘Come to me, all who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest,’ give us a glimpse of the Father’s love. (Matthew 11:28) Let us come and experience the wonderful rest He gives.

Does it seem incompatible that a God of love, who counts our tears, can send us suffering and crosses, which cost us tears? The Lord’s reply to that is, ‘Blessed are you that weep now, for you shall laugh.’ The blessing is hidden in love for the cross. Do you lack this love for your cross? Then you cannot be happy. Love your cross as a gift from your heavenly Father — and love will make it bearable. The secret of the love of the Father and the love of Jesus will be revealed to you and make you happy even amid tears. (Psalm 56:8; Luke 6:21)

Have you perhaps lost all hope of help in your difficult situation and in view of the impending calamities which will bring terror to the whole earth? Put your trust in God. We have His promise: ‘Call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you.’ Cling to this verse. Do not yield to despair, for, as the Bible warns us, ‘If you will not believe, surely you shall not be established.’ (Isaiah 7:9) Those who trust and revere God, expecting the best from Him, will experience grace and comfort. So it was long ago; so it is today.

We often think we are alone and forgotten. But we are mistaken. The eyes of God the Father are constantly upon us. He can see into our hearts. He perceives every emotion and thought, every sorrow and doubt. He looks upon us in infinitely merciful love. He is waiting for us to catch His glance and to let Him comfort and help us and set us straight with His love. He wants to guide us with His eyes. So look to Him.

Are you in need of comfort? Then know there is Someone who has comfort ready for you. There is Someone who is deeply moved by all human suffering, including your own: God your Father. It is not difficult for Him to comfort you. His love is so great that He never fails to find words and ways to express comfort. And His power to help is so great that He always has a solution; it may not come right away, but it will be perfect in its timing.

The Father in His love has planned an abundant reward for all His children’s tears. He Himself wants to wipe away every tear from our eyes. Like the father of the prodigal, He wants to embrace us and shower us with love. After the troubles of this life He wants to give us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison. He will repay us without end for our sufferings. Full of joy, He will show us the harvest of our days on earth. As we keep our thoughts focused on such a glorious outcome, our greatest suffering will seem small to us.
(Revelation 21:4, 2 Corinthians 4:17)

Perhaps you are grumbling in your heart that God does not give you any comfort or help in your suffering. However, it is this very grumbling, your complaining against the burden of your cross, and your defiance of God’s leading, that has erected a dam which in turn obstructs the flow of comfort and help He intends for you. Recommit yourself to God, wholeheartedly accepting His leading and His working in you. Then the way will be free for the blessing contained in suffering to flow into your life.
