Whenever fear and anguish are about to overwhelm us, Jesus appeals, ‘Believe in God, believe also in me.’ (John 14:1) What He is saying is this: ‘Believe in the power of God, whose presence can transform hell into heaven. Then, when you are in distress, you will have a foretaste of heaven.’ Stephen, the first Christian martyr, experienced this, as have many others after him. Ours will be the same experience if we believe in the love of God.
