As a real Father, God chastens and disciplines us. He is motivated by love. Through such measures He spares us much pain not only in eternity but also in this life. Even here on earth we have a foretaste of hell when we live in bitterness, anger, greed and unrestrained desires. God, however, wants us to experience something of heaven and its joy in this life. If we repent and turn from our sins, allowing ourselves to be cleansed, our lives will be changed. Strife will turn to peace, selfishness to love, and we will have a foretaste of heaven.

Does God’s heart seem to be closed to you? There is a way to open it — thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a sign of humble love. The humble are astonished when someone does them even the smallest favour, for they feel undeserving. They respond with loving thanks and try to repay the giver. Start thanking God for even the slightest consideration given by others; note each act of kindness; for ultimately it all comes from His hands. Such thanksgiving will open God’s heart wide, and streams of blessing will flow down upon you.

In one of the Psalms God is called ‘a very present help in trouble’. And Jesus says to His disciples, ‘Lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age.’ He is present to help, to comfort, to admonish. Say often during the course of a day, ‘Jesus, You are here with me. You will help me!’ Then you will experience the Lord blessing you with the help you need, just as He did for those living in biblical times. (Psalm 46:1, Matthew 28:20)

Who will be strong and not faint with fear during times of great distress? — Those who have learnt to say lovingly in their hearts, ‘My Father, my dearest Father.’ Those who now live with a childlike trust in God the Father in everyday life, no matter what their needs, will become strong and experience His help when they call upon His name in times of great distress. Practise now going through life in this way with your heavenly Father, calling upon His name trustingly. His name will prove its power and bring you help even in the deepest night of suffering.

You say, ‘There’s something I’ve been praying for a lot, but God isn’t answering. I might as well give up.’ Do not say that. If you are a true child of the heavenly Father, you will keep on knocking and begging. That is a sign of humility. God gives grace to the humble. The Lord listens to humble, childlike prayers. Sometimes He answers prayer differently than you expect. But He will always listen and, in one way or another, deal with your problem. For instance, He may change your heart, so that you are encouraged and uplifted; then your troubles will no longer depress you. Or it could be that your wishes and desires will become less important to you, and you will not be distressed if they are not fulfilled. Your heart will be at peace.

A sign that we have become children of God through our Lord Jesus Christ is that we accept the will of the Almighty as the will of a father. The will of our heavenly Father is always filled with tender, loving care for His children. He never acts like a heartless tyrant. This is the comforting assurance of a child of God even during times of divine judgment.

With the power of God — so the Lord tells us — you can accomplish far more than you could by relying upon your own resources, no matter how great they might be. By abiding in Him, drawing upon His strength, you will bring forth more fruit and achieve greater things than you would with your own abilities. So thank Him for making His strength available to you in your weakness. (John 15:5)

‘Love Me!’ This is the Lord’s request to you. You are sad, because you cannot sense any love in you. But love does not show itself merely in feelings. Rather, it shows itself in obedience and in faithful endurance during trials and temptations. By your very steadfastness you can show God that you love Him. Another proof of love is that you always choose God and His way. Do that, and you will be loving God your Father and fulfilling His command. Then He will keep His promise to you. He will love you in return and come and make His home in your heart.

A time of unimagined suffering threatens humanity. Even were you to flee to the ends of the earth, there, too, destruction would reach you. The psalmist knew the one hiding-place: ‘In the shadow of thy wings I will take refuge, till the storms of destruction pass by.’ (Psalm 57:1) The covering wings are the mercy of God. Take refuge there with your loved ones. His steadfast mercy will surround you. God is stronger than all other powers, commanding them at will.
